High School Open House Highlights

Saturday, November 9, Pasadena Waldorf School hosted a High School Open House on our campus at William Carey International University.

We were thrilled to see many members of our community in the lower and middle school come to visit, as well as many new families from outside of PWS. Visitors to the High School were greeted by members of the High School Committee parent volunteers and Dennis Demanett in the China Room at WCIU, where they listened to short presentations by Susan Birney (HS parent), Corby Gallegos (HS Humanities) and Sandra Ruggiero (HS Life Science).

Susan spoke eloquently and passionately about her family’s meaningful experiences with Waldorf Education and the supportive community at PWS, and Corby talked about the attention given to the social fabric of each class, as well as the newly emerging intellectual capacities of the adolescent.

Sandra Ruggiero spoke last, drawing upon her years of experience to bring a living picture of the students, curriculum and social life in a Waldorf High School. Her well-structured presentation was the perfect springboard for our sample lessons, which occurred in our classrooms on the third floor of McGavran Hall.

Prospective students and their parents were treated to two sample lessons, which were taught by Mark Dinan (Science) and Corby Gallegos (Humanities). Both classes received overwhelmingly positive feedback from teens and parents alike. Parents then had the opportunity to engage in a Q&A session with members of our faculty, followed by coffee, lemonade, and snacks!

The high school staff and faculty would like to thank the many student/parent volunteer ambassadors who helped make this open house such a smashing success. Thanks to everyone who came to this event. It couldn’t have happened without you!

There will be another open house Saturday, January 11, 2014 for all grades.  The lower school Open House begins at 9:00 a.m. at 209 E. Mariposa and the high school event begins at 1:00 p.m. at 1539 E. Howard.
